This course aims to provide new perspectives on cinema. A great deal of the existing discourse respecting cinema is reductive in its nature. We are generally invited to see the history of cinema as a series of “discoveries” (this or that “auteur” we are told, created the language of cinema) and as a selective catalogue of particular films and particular directors (the “great” films, the “great” directors). It is the contention behind this course that this is to look at cinema through the wrong end of the telescope, that there is a wider, more exciting and more varied world of cinema that is still, for most people, very largely unexplored territory. Rather than regurgitate the “standard” version of cinema and cinema-history, the aim is to explore together the wider, more complex reality that lies beyond. This is “the untold story”.
